Background Information
Metadata is information that describes and makes it easier to retrieve a particular dataset. Metadata is often called data about data or information about information. A sustainable geospatial dataset requires that geo-spatial data be accompanied by metadata. A good metadata scheme will document the information necessary to use a dataset with full knowledge of its necessary characteristics. This important information is then shared between different organizations that have interest in the same dataset.

The Cree datasets included in the GeoPortal were documented as two main data collections. The one for COTA, which includes the TRIPP database with layers of information such as outfitters, canoe routes, snowmobile trails, campsites, portages etc. and the one for CTA, which includes the cabins locations and the trapline and harvest databases. For these dataset collections the following information was recorded: title of the data, description of the data, the creator of the data and metadata, relevant contacts and contributors to the data, source of the data, language the data is in, geographic coverage, the spatial reference system and the rights regarding the data.
